TARNATION joins the growing number of personal, almost private, documentary movies of the last decade. The film is a nearly psychedelic mix of Super 8 family movies, old answering machine messages, video diaries, glimpses from 1980s pop culture, and filmatic reconstructions blending to form an epic portrait of a dissolving family. The film begins in 2003, when Jonathan is told that his mother has suffered an overdose and died. We are brought back in time with him, seeing how an early interest in acting interweaves with stories of child abuse, drugs and psychoses.

Caouette, Jonathan
Jonathan Caouette (b. 1973) started to document his life with his neighbour's videocamera at eleven. At fifteen he produced a musical version of Blue Velvet. His filminterest became a way to both document and to escape his own turbulent life. Tarnation won the award for Best New Filmmaker at the Boston Society of Film Critics Award, Best Documentary at the Los Angeles IFP/West Film Festival 2004 og Best Non-Fiction Film at this years National Society of Film Critics Award.
